  • Overview

    This position provides safety and bus maintenance training to employees with emphasis on the Maintenance Department. The Safety and Training Instructor develops and delivers the curriculum and lesson plans that are used in classroom training, and schedules the appropriate follow-up actions for all mechanical staff within all divisions.  This position provides training to all newly hired and promoted employees within the Maintenance Department. The Safety and Training Instructor also conducts mandated safety and OSHA training as required in other departments. During the course of work, it may be necessary to work all three shifts while accomplishing training objectives.


    1. Provide all basic safety and OSHA required training for all newly hired and promoted employees in the Maintenance Department.
    2. Administer practical tests for current employees bidding on maintenance department positions, and external applicants applying for maintenance department positions.  
    3. Conduct monthly OSHA mandated safety training classes for specific employees in Maintenance, Building & Grounds, Storeroom, and Cashiers.
    4. Provide OSHA required training to certify and re-certify all mechanics in the operation of equipment such as forklift, truck, bobcat, front end loader, scissors lift and bucket lift.
    5. Provide required training to certify all mechanics in tire safety and schedule on-line re-certification every 3 years.
    6. Conduct employee training for all new equipment on buses and in maintenance facilities.
    7. Schedule and oversee vendor training classes for all mechanics.
    8. Perform monthly OSHA required building safety inspections.
    9. Assist with accident investigations and transporting employees for mandatory alcohol and drug testing.
    10. Correct deficiencies identified on the monthly Shop Safety Inspection Report.
    11. Maintain pertinent training records.


    1. Three (3) years of experience developing and delivering training material.
    2. Five (5) years of experience and comprehensive knowledge of the repair of common automotive and heavy-duty vehicles.
    3. Ability and experience in training staff on mechanical components and repairs.
    4. Demonstrated technical skills for performing work on all automotive and heavy-duty equipment.
    5. Experience and comprehensive knowledge of OSHA rules and guidelines
    6. Must be able to teach in a classroom environment.  
    7. Must have a valid CDL
    8. Must have the ability to obtain a Passenger (P) endorsement upon hire.
    9. Excellent written communication, verbal communication and presentation skills.
    10. Knowledge of computer operations.
    11. Excellent organization and record keeping skills.
    12. Knowledge of safety policies and procedures.
    13. Excellent attendance and overall work record


    1. Must have good finger and manual dexterity.
    2. Ability to effectively provide both oral and written communications requiring good verbal expression, satisfactory hearing and eyesight clarity sufficient to read.
    3. Ability to climb, kneel, crouch and reach.
